The project brief was a small scale, 24 seater restaurant interior design by a demanding concept of ‘Krishna-Radhe’ within a modest budget.
The concept of Krishna - Radha is so ingrained in Indian culture with its deep mystical symbolism. The ever-smiling, sensual, lotus-eyed Krishna with a garland of flowers around his neck is described and imagined as being blue in color and wearing peacock feathers. In Indian culture, anything immeasurable appears to mortal eyes as blue- be its vast expanse of sky or ocean or Krishna. Through this understanding of the symbolic meanings of colors, the project grew beyond just using functional elements to make up the architectural space, to the creative use of colors and evoke stimuli in a psycho- spatial environment.
Glass as the Material expression of colours
We used Glass for the unerring material expression of these colors and its sensuality. Coloured glasses apart from rendering the required colours, allowed us to work with additional properties of its translucency and textural properties in the interiors. Glass covered the major horizontal surface of the interior in well-proportioned modules of blue and green outlined with thin steel frames. As we all know, colors do not exist without the presence of light. The sensations produced by colours & glass is further accentuated by the action of carefully selected warm light in the space.
To keep the gaze of the observer on the colours, the furniture is designed with minimal hues. Benches are with iron and pine wood whereas tables are of iron and vitrified tile as the top.
