Nowadays, eco-friendly, sustainable and green are buzzwords. However, defining them in relation to building design is complex. There is an urgent need in India to extend the understanding of sustainable architecture with socio-cultural aspects of its production. Indian builders and architects have failed to recognize the significance of the social dimension in facilitating sustainable development. The key to architectural sustainability is to work with, rather than against Nature. Gandhiji was the only leader in our country who talked consistently about the building needs of our country and said that the real India lives in the villages.

Socio-Cultural

Vernacular architecture almost always has the right answers to all our problems. We have already forgotten that many of our huge irrigation and power dams, which still serve us efficiently, were built with stone and lime mortar and the builders then knew nothing about cement. We should show how modern we can be by using the research which our forefathers have done. Vernacular architecture has been losing ground over the last couple of centuries as modern methods began to prevail. This is unfortunate since many of the old ways employ simple concepts that are energy-efficient.

Projects by Himanshu Patel:

Any object or space can be measured in 3-D, but to feel good about it, is the 6thD. We design to let one feel good, and we are interested in exploring ways in which spaces can create experiential happiness. So we are passionate about design but driven by ideas rather than personalities.

We design to let you feel good. The 6th dimension is not restricted to measure the physical world but to explore the Feel-Good Spaces. Any object or space can be measure in 3 Dimension but to feel good about it is 6thD.

Architecture is more than just about a built statement through my Ahmedabad based vernacular architectural practice at 6thD design studio, I promote the use of locally available materials, traditional building techniques, culturally and climatically relevant building design.

Vashi Farm House:

In a country with a history and culture like India’s, it is always interesting to see how designers and architects bring that context into their modern efforts. The quaint, vivid “Vashi farmhouse” featured in this post was designed by Ahmadabad based architect Himanshu Patel from 6thD design studio with the overt principle of vernacular architecture in mind.

Aaranya Farmstay Resort:

The mother earth has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed. This simple statement remains the greatest insight into the ecology of this planet. The concern for the climate as well as economical and cultural sustainability has been looking at to incorporate without which sustainability may not work in the Indian context.
